US Approves Massive New Weapons Deals for Taiwan
According to approvals issued by the State Department, the arms transfers include a deal exceeding $4 billion for 60 M107A7 self-propelled howitzers and supporting gear, along with 82 M142 HIMARS multiple-launch rocket systems and 420 Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS). The package also contains over $1 billion worth of ALTIUS tube-launched loitering drone munitions and $353 million in TOW anti-tank missiles.
In addition, Washington cleared a purchase surpassing $1 billion for a Tactical Mission Network, a system designed to deliver secure communications for military units, together with related software, hardware, and support services.
Further authorizations covered more than $375 million in Javelin missile sales, a $91.4 million agreement for Harpoon missile repair assistance and associated equipment, and a $96 million deal for spare parts and maintenance support for AH-1W SuperCobra helicopters.
Each proposed transaction was announced individually by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the body responsible for formally notifying major foreign military sales.
These notifications triggered a 30-day congressional review window during which lawmakers may introduce a joint resolution to reject the sales. However, the Congressional Research Service notes that Congress has never successfully halted such an arms transfer.
