Taiwan Signs USD6.6B US Arms Deals
The contracts, finalized earlier this month, amount to 208.77 billion New Taiwan dollars and include major weapons systems and related military support. Among the purchases are High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and M109A7 self-propelled howitzers.
According to the reported breakdown, about $3.9 billion is allocated for HIMARS systems, $2.3 billion for the artillery vehicles, and $168 million for missile stockpile replenishment.
Additional agreements cover naval anti-armor missiles, joint US-Taiwan production of large-caliber ammunition, and consulting services for an integrated air defense system.
The deals were concluded after Taiwan’s military said Washington agreed to allow delayed payments for 82 HIMARS units and 60 M109A7 systems. The delay is linked to legislative discussions in Taiwan over a special defense budget proposed by the ruling party to help finance the purchases.
The United States remains Taiwan’s primary arms supplier. Last year, the administration approved a record $11 billion in arms sales, which drew criticism from Beijing, along with sanctions imposed on several US defense-related companies.
Separately, Taiwan’s Ocean Affairs Council conducted a maritime rescue drill near Taiping Island, a strategically located feature in the disputed Spratly Islands of the South China Sea. The exercise included scenarios involving interception of suspicious vessels and coordinated rescue operations, marking the first visit by a council head to the island in seven years.
